Pine, Lodgepole

LODGEPOLE PINE  Pinus contorta var. latifolia

• A tall, slender evergreen native to the foothills and montane regions of the Canadian Rockies, including much of Alberta; known for its straight trunk and narrow, open crown.
• Bears paired, slightly twisted needles of deep green, giving the tree a fine, textured appearance; bark is thin and scaly, becoming darker and more rugged with age.
• Produces small, egg‑shaped cones that may remain closed for years, opening after heat exposure—a natural adaptation to periodic wildfire in its native habitat.
• Exceptionally hardy and adaptable, thriving in sandy, gravelly, or nutrient‑poor soils; performs well in dry sites and withstands harsh prairie winds once established.
• A reliable, fast‑growing species for shelterbelts, naturalized plantings, and acreage landscapes where a tough, native evergreen is desired.
• Full Sun
• Zone 2, 15–25 m Height × 4–6 m Width
