Mayday, Sunstar

SUNSTAR MAYDAY  Prunus padus ‘Sunstar’

• A hardy ornamental mayday selected for its improved branching structure and reduced suckering, forming a rounded to broadly oval crown with a clean, symmetrical appearance and strong spring bloom.
• Produces long, fragrant clusters of white blossoms in early spring, offering excellent pollinator value and a striking display before leaf‑out.
• Sets abundant small black drupes in late summer that are technically edible but strongly astringent; fruit is heavily favoured by birds and can create moderate mess on hard surfaces.
• Suckering is less aggressive than Common Mayday but still present, especially when stressed or pruned. In large rural plantings or shelterbelts, this can be an asset, helping fill gaps, maintain a dense lower tier, and support long‑term stand renewal — but in small urban beds it requires monitoring.
• Very tolerant of drought, clay soils, and exposed prairie sites, requiring periodic inspection for pests and pruning.
• Full Sun
