Walnut, Butternut

BUTTERNUT WALNUT  Juglans cinerea

• Also known as White Walnut, this is a hardy, medium‑sized native tree valued for its open, spreading form and distinctive compound foliage, offering a rugged, naturalized character in prairie and woodland landscapes.
• Large, pinnate leaves create a bold texture through summer and turn soft yellow in fall; male catkins and small female flowers appear in spring and are wind‑pollinated.
• Produces elongated, sticky‑husked nuts with rich, oily kernels that are edible and prized by wildlife; fruit ripens in late summer to early fall.
• Prefers moist, well‑drained soils and sheltered sites; less tolerant of drought and urban stress than black walnut. A top CO2 absorbing species.
