WESTERN SANDCHERRY  Prunus besseyi

• A low, spreading deciduous shrub native to the western and central Prairies, forming arching colonies with narrow, glossy leaves that take on rich burgundy tones in fall.
• Produces abundant clusters of fragrant white flowers in spring, highly attractive to bees and other early pollinators.
• Bears dark purple to nearly black cherries in late summer; edible and often used for jams, jellies, pies, and winemaking, though typically tart when eaten fresh.
