Raspberry, Native

NATIVE RASPBERRY  Rubus idaeus var. strigosus

• A hardy, suckering deciduous shrub native to the Canadian Prairies, valued for its sweet, bright‑red berries and strong ecological importance. Forms thickets of upright canes that provide excellent wildlife habitat and natural screening.
• Produces delicate white spring flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators; flowers mature into juicy wild red raspberries in mid‑ to late summer, prized by humans, birds, and mammals alike.
• Canes live for two years: first‑year canes (primocanes) grow vegetatively, while second‑year canes (floricanes) flower and fruit before dying back — a natural cycle typical of raspberries.
• Thrives in a wide range of soils, including clay and loam, and is highly tolerant of prairie conditions; spreads readily by underground runners, making it excellent for naturalized areas, edible landscapes, and erosion control.
• Full Sun to Part Shade
• Zone 2, 1–1.5 m Height × 1–1.5 m Width (spreading)
