COMMON MAYDAY — MULTI‑STEM  Prunus padus
• A hardy, early‑flowering ornamental tree grown in a multi‑stem clump form, creating a dense, vase‑shaped to rounded silhouette with strong spring presence and a naturalized woodland look.
• Produces long, fragrant clusters of white blossoms in early spring, offering strong pollinator value and dramatic ornamental impact before leaf‑out.
• Sets abundant small black drupes in late summer that are technically edible but strongly astringent; fruit is heavily favoured by birds and can create noticeable mess on patios, sidewalks, and vehicles, so planting location should be considered.
• Multi‑stem form tends to sucker more readily than single‑stem trees, especially when stressed or pruned. While this may be undesirable in tight urban beds, it becomes an asset in shelterbelts, where suckering helps fill gaps, maintain a dense lower tier, and support long‑term stand renewal without replanting.
• Very tolerant of drought, clay soils, and exposed prairie sites, but requires periodic monitoring for pests and pruning.
• Full Sun
• Zone 2, 5–7 m Height × 4–6 m Width
